Special Needs: Had 2 heartworm shots and heart too weak for any more shots and is on Heartgard. Update: Hemmy was begun on Black Walnut treatment for HW's on 9/11/09.
Description: 9-23-08 UPDATE - A note from Hemmy's foster mom: (Hemmy is) One of the happiest dogs I’ve ever seen and very comfortable with his new life. He has Higgins as his best bud and they like to lay in the sun together and talk politics. Appetite is amazing and he’s getting fat rolls on his neck. Every evening it’s Mom and The Boys time in the laundry room — Higgins on the washing machine and Hemmy on the floor — it’s a total free for all to see who can get the pets and smooches first. Then treats and lights out. He is just a really cool dog. Hopefully he will be blessed with more time on this earth but when he leaves he will go a happy dog that had a home and not as a dog that nobody cared about.
7-28-08 UPDATE- Hemmy had his second heartworm shot in mid July and vet said that his heart doesn't sound good and no improvement. Hemmy is a sweet boy, and this is so hard on him. He has had several scares since his last shot, but is hanging on. He needs all of our prayers to pull him through. We love you Hemmy!!!
7-2-08 UPDATE- Hemmy is doing okay with heartworm treatment so far. He will go in again in mid July for another heartworm shot. Keep praying for a miracle!!
6-13-08 UPDATE: Dear, sweet Hemmy had his first injection today to rid him of the heartworms. If you are a praying person, please pray for Hemmy. The vet was not too optimistic about Hemmy's chances for survival due to his very heavy load of worms and his age. But we know the power of prayer, the power of love, and the power of great nursing care and Hemmy is receiving ALL of these things. He's a survivor! We will think nothing but positive thoughts for a good outcome! We'll update again soon.
5-2-08 UPDATE: Hemmy continues to make good progress. He still needs to gain more weight though. The only thing holding him back from starting his heartworm treatment is a few more pounds and he will be using the Doxycycline method of weakening the HW's before treatment. Thanks for checking in on Hemmy!!
4-20-08 UPDATE: Foster Mom reports that Hemmy has gained weight and is looking good, so he probably will start his heartworm treatment soon. The swelling in his feet is gone and so is the redness of the skin. Just needs to gain a few more pounds. His bare spots on his back have hair coming in, so that is great news. If he was a human, he would be a comedian. He loves to wiggle, get lots of love, and loves being indoors!! Thanks again to his Sponsors and Foster Mom who are the reason that he is still alive and getting better!! :) He needs prayers through his heartworm treatment. One more thing...earlier reports said he was missing teeth..Actually, he has all his teeth, but the incisors are worn down, canines are worn and/or broken, also has all molars. He probably wore them down chewing no telling what before he was rescued. He will be a great Boxer to someone who knows how precious an older Boxer can be, and he will love you to death!!!
4-6-08 Hemmy is with BoxAR and he is safe. By the way, he is named after Hemmingway. He is a very sweet boy who is settling in quickly. He has a nice bed that he already loves. He is very skinny and our Angel with do her magic and "fluff" him up. He is friendly and is following his Angel around and finds everything interesting. He is eating and having treats. He is an older Boxer and has had a very rough life. There is hair growing back on the open spots on his back. He has a problem with his leg and other health problems and he will be seeing a vet soon. Hemmy probably thinks he has died and gone to heaven. Keep him in your prayers.
You may recognize Hemmy from our front page when we needed sponsors to rescue him. He was found in an abandoned trailer with 12 dogs, and Hemmy was one of the few who was rescued. He does have heartworms and will need treatment. Hemmy has had a rough life, but he is a sweet Boxer who loves people and other dogs. He has some old scars on his back and on his neck from a chain. He is missing many of his teeth. Keep a watch on how he progresses!! He has been neutered, up to date on shots, and microchipped.
NOTE: We are not a shelter or pound. We don't have a facility. We are all volunteers who love the Boxers. We have jobs and families and don't have "regular business hours". For this reason, we don't show the dogs until an application has been submitted. Submitting an application does not obligate you to adopt a Boxer, but it does tell us that your interest in rescue is serious. We thank you for being considerate of our time and efforts.
